Evaluation 7

- Looking back at our preliminary task, which we do around 4 months ago, we have made improvements. From doing the preliminary  task we got feedback from people who watched it and they mentioned which scenes within the preliminary task needed improvements. Especially with the camera positions. Examples of these are,

- Here is a picture of a clip from our preliminary task and shows Me one minute then,

- This is the same clip from the one above and it shows that me disappearing from the same shot which wasn't meant to happen. We've learnt from this and thought about the improvements we needed to make. Which we have added to our opening two minutes and it doesn't occur with the opening two minutes which shows that we have taken the criticisms from our preliminary task and didn't include them during our opening two minutes.

- Throughout the preliminary task and towards making our opening two minutes we have learnt different shot types and editing techniques which we have included during our opening two minutes.

- Shot types we have learnt and included.

- Over the shoulder shot- which is a shot of someone or something taken from the perspective or camera angle from the shoulder of the other person. The back of the person is used to frame the image of whatever the camera is pointing towards. We put this into practice in our preliminary task which have used in our opening two minutes which looks more clear that its an over the shoulder shot. By using this shot at this bit of the scene makes the audience feel more involved as they get to see what the victim (Emma) was looking at. We include another over the shoulder shot aswell from when the victim (Emma) reads the letter from the first victim.

- We also used over the shoulder shot within our opening two minutes. However, we used it differently than we did in the opening two minutes as in the preliminary task its used during a conversation and within the opening two minutes its used with a picture and letter.

- Long shot - a long shot usually takes place at the beginning of a horror film as it shows the beginning scene in a clear way. We have used a long shot around the beginning bit of the scene as it shows where the victim  (Emma) is in more of a clear way so it makes it more realistic as its in a public place. Furthermore, its the best way to established the location of the scenes. The long shot we used was moving as the victim was running away from the camera which shall draw attention to the audience. We have included more than one long shot during our film which creates the same effect. Which is the impression we wanted to give to the audience.

- In our preliminary task we included a close up. We decided to use an extreme close- up in our opening two minutes as its gives more of an effect and creates more of a suspense and tension towards the audience which is what horror films include.

- Extreme close up- Shows more detail or the person and gives the audience an impression of how they are feeling for there facial expressions. Its more visual than a close up shot. It usually has an extreme close- up of a face which shall show only the mouth or eyes and no background this shall be used for a dramatic effect.  From our extreme close up the audience can see how the victim (Emma) is feeling from the eyes as they winded as shes reading the letter and whilst she takes a deep breath. This gives it more of an effect towards

- Low shot -  Its an increase in height. Low angels help give a tense of confusion towards the audience it makes the person on screen look more powerful and taller which is our case of the film shall show that the letter has made the victim (Emma) realise what shes got to do and shows that she shall stand up to the antagonist as that's what the letter from the first victim tells her to do. By using an extreme close up shot and a low shot in the same bit of the scene shall create more of an effect and the audience shall get exactly how the victim is feeling which is what we want the audience to see.

- In our preliminary task we used high angle shot which gives an overview of the location and of whats included within that shot. For our opening two minutes we didn't include this shot type as it didn't match with our opening two minutes and the shot types we had already used as it wouldn't give of a better effect.

- Shot types we used,

- Preliminary task.
- Medium shot.
- Shot reverse shot.
- Close - up.
- Over the shoulder shot.
- High shot.

- Shot types we used,

- Opening two minutes.
- Medium shots.
- Long shots.
- Over the shoulder shots.
- Extreme close - up.
- Low shots.
- Close ups.

- We have used more of a variety of shot types within the opening two minutes. We used the shots which linked with a horror film as we wanted to give a certain effect towards the audience  We have learnt how to use these shots and put them into our opening two minutes.

- Different effects and techniques we used during the preliminary task and our opening two minutes.

- In our preliminary task we used shot reverse shot as it shows two people having a conversation and that's the impression that we wanted to send across towards the audience as there was two people involved within the conversation. In our opening two minutes we didn't think it was necessary to use shot reverse shot as its an opening two minutes and we didn't want to give too much away with what was going to happen within the opening two minutes.

-Jump cuts - same shots are taken from different positions. We used jump cuts within our opening two minutes which we thought created more of a tense effect towards the audience as we see this camera get closer and closer towards the victim (Emma) as shes walking towards the bridge.

- Match on action - where the perspective of the camera changes position during the scene. In our opening two minutes we included match on action as we wanted the audience to know what the victim (Emma) was reading as we wanted them to see that there was a written letter.

- In our preliminary task we used the 180 degree rule.Whilst we was doing our preliminary task i didn't understand what it was. However, during our opening two minutes we included the 180 degree rule. It makes more sense to me now. The 180 degree rule is on screen with the relationship between a character and another character within a scene. Theres a line which connects the characters and keeping the camera on one side of the line.

- This is the 180 degree rule in our opening two minutes, which creates the effect on the antagonist and the victim (Emma) which shall  makes it clear to the audience what the relationship between the victim (Emma) and the antagonist it like.

- We didn't use the effect of slow motion within our preliminary task. However, the slow motion effect we thought shall have more of an effect if we used it during our opening two minutes. It worked well with the scene as the picture the victim (Emma) was holding fell to the floor and by including slow motion at this bit of the scene made our opening two minutes have more of a variety of different camera work and editing. By using slow motion makes it more of an important point within the opening two minutes and we wanted to make the audience know that as the victim ( me ) dropped the picture that she is scared. Which is what we wanted the audience to insinuate and that the victim (Emma) is the next antagonist's victim.

- Overall, we have used a different variety of camera shots, camerawork and editing.

- For our sound and voice over we recorded it on our iphone app. We used a piano for our sound which we recorded and then sent to ourselves over email. Furthermore, for our voice over we recorded the voice over which we also sent to ourselves. We found this the easiest way to get our voice and sound to our opening two minutes. it was also easier to transfer the voice over that we recorded so we could add it to the opening 2 minutes, as it was just one click away to send it to the email which we could access on the computer and just add it to the opening 2 minutes

We used a tripod which we borrowed from our teacher, this made everything much easier as we could get a steady and more accurate shot so we didnt lose marks when filming.

- We used our own camera for filming as we found it easier to use than the schools ones which they was going to provide us with. We used normal settings on the camera and no effect as we was going to edit it on movie maker. We found this more effective way as we shall be able to see the scenes and shots we filmed more clearly. For our title of the film we took a picture of the pathway and then put the title 'the pathway' and then editied it to make it link with our opening two minutes.

We used many different technology based products. These were;

The voice recorder on the iPhone. This was a very big essential piece for our final project. The voice recorder was used to record the scream used when the victim (Emma) 'transforms' to something scary once seeing the killer (Jordan). We also used this to record our soundtrack and Emma's voice over. So far, this is one of the most importance piece of equipment we've used.

Laptop:
This was one of the most important piece of equipment we used for our 2 minute opening production. The laptop brought everything together, using programmes on it such a windows movie maker, which helped make the film and also transfering the sounds over, so that we could add it in to our presentation. The laptop is essential for our opening two minutes as it brings everything together.

Editing Software:
The editing software we used was both windows movie maker and Adobe Premier Elements. These who were the key essentials we used for making our film, as we were able to add effects and edit the 'bloopers' out of our film. This was linked into the laptop, as this could only be used on a laptop/computer. These softwares are very good for editing as it gave us a whole range of options, adding in transactions and also helping adding in our sounds.

Piano:
We used the piano to create our background music for when the antagonist (Jordan) appeared or was going to appear in our 2 minute clip. The piece was created by Bryony. We added in the music using windows movie maker or Adobe premier elemants. The music which was created was a scary, eerey sound, as it gave the audience and more scarier effect to the film.

Evaluation 5 - How the Audience was addressed

Evaluation Activity 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience we are aiming for our media product would be 15+ as we try to focus on the main horror genre ages which would be 15+ as it shows from the audience profiling. This audience target would relate to many other horror films and the other audience profiling. People watch horror movies as it gives them the thrill and excilleration, people may watch them by themselves or in a group of people

We asked a couple of people about what they would like to find in a horror film (music, where would they shop, favourite TV programme, etc) and compare it to our media product.

Audience profiling of other films was a very good way and it helped us alot, to discover what our target audience would be and what age group would be, and who would be most interested in watching our film. It also gives us a chance to compare our films to others and this could publisize the film a lot more, say if they were to watch 'The Ring' and enjoyed it..
I'd say our film is also very psychological and a horror, so this adds to who would want to watch this film as this might intrigue them more and make them want to watch it. A very popular psychological film would the the Saw films.

The antagonist from our opening two minutes has some differences and similarities from the antagonist in sinister.

- Similarities.

-They both share one of the main characters within the film they appear in. I have picked the antagonist from sinister as they are both hard to distinguish and infer whether they are human or what they are and what category they come under. Furthermore, in our opening two minutes we don't see the antagonists face which doesn't make it clear to the audience whether the character is human. Similarly, throughout sinister we meet the antagonist and he appears in more scenes which is what we are including in our film. The opening two minutes of sinister doesn't show the antagonist this creates more of a suspense. In our opening two minutes we meet the character but we don't come face to face with him which makes it unclear to what the antagonist is. When the victim (Emma) is on the bridge and turns around with the approach of the antagonist her reaction gives an impression that the antagonist either looks possessed or hes holding some kind of weapon. The audience don't see what victim (Emma) is seeing which creates tension for the audience.

- The characters of our antagonist and sinister antagonist play similar roles as they both seem to move onto different people to attack or kill. As in sinister its the house which has a curse of the antagonist in which he killed a family which lived there before the new family which moved there. He kills them one by one and keeps a child which he creates to be evil and follow rules from him. In our opening two minutes it shows that the antagonist has killed a girl and her friend is at a graveyard with a letter the girl which was killed wrote and explains that shes sorry. This doesn't give to much away with what the narrative and storyline is going to include and how the antagonist attacks his victims.

- Differences.
- There isn't many differences included in our antagonist (Jordan) and sinister. However, we don't see the antagonist (Jordan) in sinister in action as we only meet him in vidoes and pictures whereas, our antagonist the audience does see as he appears in the majoirty of the scenes watching the victim and her every move.

- Appearance -
- The appearance of the characters are different as you can see what the antagonist (Jordan) from sinister looks like. Whereas, we don't come acorss the appearance of the antagonist from our opening two minutes. Even though the audeince don't see what the antagonist looks like they can infer how the antagonist looks from the reaction from the victims (Emma) and how the victim (Emma) looks possessed and like shes been attack from the antagonist.

- Costume -
- Both of the antagonists (Jordan) wear clothes which normal people shall wear. As the antagonist from sinister wears a suit. Whereas, the antagonist (Jordan)  from our opening two minutes wears a black tracksuit which is what normal, everyday people shall wear. The antagonist from Sinister's costume comes across as more threatening, as wearing a suit gives the effect of being more scary and has a huge impact on the audience. Whereas, the antagonist from our opening two minutes costume isn't as threatening as what the antagonist (Jordan) is wearing is what we see on a day to day basis, which doesnt make him as scary or as threatening.

- Role in film.
- They both have this curse on people and attack people which happens one by one and both of the films are supernatrual and show mytsery which make the audience question about what he does to his victims. In sinister a family is killed one by one and differently which is shown. In our opening two minutes not much is given away as we don't see how the antgonist kills his victims.

- Overall, these two characters have similarites.

Evaluation 1

The title of the film

-
In the opening two minutes we see the victim (which is Emma) walks to the bridge. This shall make it more effective and realistic as it shows that its a place where we filmed which shall make the audience know that we made it ourselves and its original. We watched many horror movie trailers and we didn’t see any of the movies use the background for their title sequence. However, what we used for our title sequence was the pathway we used for filming (hence the movie title ‘the pathway’), in a black and white effect, then white writing over the top of the picture, giving it and a more eerie effect.

- Setting/location

- The location we used is a typical horror film setting as its a quiet and eerie area. The location is a deserted area which makes the film more link to a horror genre. It makes the audience more tense as theres nothing around to make them guess whats going to happen within the film. Its more of a mystery o the audience. The outline of the trees in the background and the shadows make it more scary and unnerving environment.

- Costumes and props.

-
From this picture we can see the victims costume (which is Emma). This is used in a wide variety of horror films, where a casual, normal teenage girl, gets haunted by an antagonist (which in our 2 minute film – is Jordan). This links to many horror films.

-
This type of costume worn by our antagonist (Jordan) makes him feel out of place to anything else in the film, we can see that he looks more mysterious and scarier. Next time we film a horror we shall consider what the antagonist wears to make it go with our opening two minutes and fits within a typical horror film. Next time, we will make the antagonist (Jordan) wear more black clothing, without any logos, this would make it scarier and more eerie and may have a good/scary effect on the audience

- Camerawork and editing.

- For this bit of the scene we used jump cuts which show the victimfrom far away then gradually gets closer and closer to the victim which infers that its of the horror genre as this is often used to build up the tension.

- Title font and style.
 - The font style and colour we chose for our title isn't a normal horror cliche type of style for a title. The font style we chose is simple as we have chosen a background from the setting we used. We didn't want to make our title look over the top as we didn't want the title to be the main part of our opening two minutes we want the audience to remember whats included in our opening two minutes and whats going to happen as we feel that its the important bit to make the audience want to see the rest of the film. The title of our film can be similar to some horror films whereas, others use different styles and fonts which depends on what there film is about. We find that our title font and style links with our opening two minutes the pathway.

- Story and how the opening sets it up.

-
The story of our film is when the antagonist (Jordan) kills a victim which is a normal teenage girl and the once he’s done with her he shall find someone who was close to her then this carries on and towards the end we find out what he does and how he does it. The opening sets it up as we can infer that there are deaths involved in our horror film as we start the opening two minutes at a graveyard and the next victim is reading her friends letter she wrote before she was killed from the antagonist (Jordan). Furthermore, we see the antagonist (Jordan) following the victim wherever she goes. He followed her from the graveyard to the bridge where the first victim (Emma) shall have died from which is hopefully where the audience can infer this. We see the antagonist (Jordan) walking up behind the victim (Emma) whilst she is looking over the bridge and once she turned around a saw the antagonist she turned around again and looked as if she had been attack by the antagonist as her face looked distort. In the opening two minutes we don't see whether the victim (Emma) dies or what happens to me which shall give more suspense and tension towards the audience what shall build up more tension within the film and towards the audience which is what horror films do as it wants to get the audience involved in with the film and they feel engaged with the characters which is when they can feel what the characters are going through especially the victim (Emma) the music we have included and used links with the tension of the opening to minutes, as we get closer to finding out what the killer looks like by face and how he kills his victims, it then tricks the audience then we don't find out which shall make the audience want to watch the horror film as they shall find out what happens. This is the point in a horror genre film.

- Genre and how the opening suggest it.

- The opening of our two minutes infers that its a horror genre as its at a graveyard and you can insinuate that there is deaths and killing included within the opening two minutes which usually takes place in a horror film. Throughout the opening two minutes more things happen within the scenes like being introduced to the antagonist which doesn't give to much away as it doesn't show the events which happen to the victims, which is what horror films tend to do as it puts the audience more in suspense and builds up tension. We have a scene on the bridge where the antagonist is watching the victim and slowly goes behind her and she turns around looking normal then transforms to looking possessed which ends with a scream which shall make the audience feel more engaged within the film and shall be wanting to see what happens after the opening two minutes of the pathway which is why our opening two minutes goes into a genre of horror.

- How the characters are introduced.

-
This is where we see the main character introduced and the girl who lost her friend from the antagonist (Jordan) which hasn’t been included yet, but comes in later in the scene and the audience don't know how this happened. By introducing to the audience the next victim (Emma) at the graveyard shall make it known to the audience that she is going to be approach by the antagonist within the opening two minutes or the rest of the film. This is link every other typical horror movie as we see the victim (Emma) stand alone in a graveyard, looking over her best friends grave, reading a letter her friend left her before she died.  There is no noise around the graveyard and we add sound to make a more eerie, so the audience can sense something’s bad going to happen or the antagonist (Jordan) will be coming into the scene soon

- This is one of the other main characters within the opening two minutes. We are introduced to him second he is the antagonist. We are introduced to him as he is standing behind a tree and appears whilst the next victim (Emma) is at her friends grave reading a letter from her telling her to run as what she referred to as 'him' that he's coming and the next victim (Emma) needs to run. We see during the opening two minutes the antagonistic scrunching up a picture of the first victim he targeted then the next which was her friend. He does this in an angry way like they've done something wrong or hes just disturbed in making his victims life's hell. The antagonist follows the victim to the bridge where he watches her for a few seconds without her knowing then in small steps he gets closer and closer behind her as she turned around something happened whilst she was doing that and the antagonistic attack her in some way which we don't see in the opening two minutes. We see the victim looking possessed by the antagonist as he encroached her. This links with this character fitting into a typical horror genre film as not alot is given away at this point in the film as its only the opening two minutes which is what the majority of horror films tend to do which is where our introducing of the characters is fitting in with a horror genre type of film.

- Even though we don't meet the first victim we are still introduced by her as it briefly explains what it going to happen during the the film and what is going to be included. As she writes a letter telling her friend that shes sorry and was warning her friend to run and fight back and said ' its too late for me, but not too late for you' This gives us the impression that the same thing the antagonist did is going to happen to the second victim (Emma). This tends to happen in typical horror films where you don't meet a victim and they give you the information the audience needs to feel involved within the opening two minutes. Films like the ring include this. However, both of the girls are alive and one of the girls doesn't believe her friend about a tape. This links with how the next victim warning her friend which died telling her not to do something which we don't find out within the opening two minutes.

- Special effects.

- For the special effects we used slow motion. This effect slows down the scene which shall have an effect on the audience has the scene slows down and makes there have more tension. Has it slowly hits the floor the audience shall be thinking and trying to insinuate whats going to happen next. Slow motion shall make people remember that scene as its the only bit in slow motion and has impact on the audience. Horror films like saw use slow motion which has an effect on the film and the audience.

- We have also make some of the scenes blurry which we did for effect as it makes the audience look closer into the picture which shall make the look more into the narrative and storyline the pathway and our opening two minutes which makes it more of question of the horror film towards the audience.

Changes!

We decided to change parts of the opening 2 minutes, this is because in the draft the last 1 minute was just walking down a pathway, with nothing happening, so we decide to change it, we asked our teacher and asked what grade what we would get with our draft. Our teacher (Mrs Martin) told us and we started to make changes straight away. We decided to get rid of the last minute and added a minute at the start of the film, this was because the last minute was bringing our marks down. We added the minute at the start of Emma in a graveyard looking over her friends grave, and holding a picture of Emma and her friend (Bryony), and we got Emma to read a letter and added a voice over of Emma reading the letter, to give it a more freaky effect.
We also added sound to the video to give it a more freaky effect. For this we used a Electric Piano/Keyboard, this would enable us to get a whole range of different sounds and we searched through the sounds until we found a more scarier sound. We made a piece which Bryony composed and it was really effective. Then added it to the final piece.
We also added a sound of Emma screaming from when her face changes from normal to scary, this gave it a more scarier and effective feel to it once it was in the first 2 minutes.

We hope that this would've boosted our grade/marks up, as this has been vastly improved since our draft and made it more scarier.

Opening 2 Minutes draft

This is our opening 2 minutes although we are a few seconds of our target, there is a bit more film to yet be added which should cover the time we haven't covered. The main pieces we need to complete are more sound effects purely at the beginning of the 2 minutes, and a few camera shots need to be edited e.g. Emma's face change needs to be blended and also the scene where I show up next to the tree needs to be ended with me not being seen, to give the impression I was never there

The final Outcome of the Make up

This was the final outcome:

Step 4 - Horror Movie Make up

Step 4: This was the last step, we used a black eyeliner to outline the facial features of Emma's face to make the stand out and too look scarier. We also blackened Emma's lips to also make them stand out.
We had to make the lines on Emma's face more bold and darker, just so the camera would be able to pick them up and give it the more scarier effect. The black lips made Emma look like she is appearing dead.

Step 3 -Horror Movie Make Up

Step 3 - We used a pink, brown and black make up to outline more of the facial features and make the more bolder and stand out. This made look more scarier and to look sort of damaged. Emma's eyes look worn, like she has been worried or she hasnt had any sleep. This gives the effect that the victim's death was drawn out.

Step 2 - Horror Make Up

Step 2: Next we used a black eye shadow, this is to show the creases in the head, this gives an effect that she is constantly frowning, also this makes Emma's face look more darker than normal. This shows change in the victim.

Emma's Make Up - Step 1 - The Victim

Step 1: We used white face paint to give Emma a scary more pale freaky looking effect to help scare the audience. We did this due to that when people are normally scared or in shock, they become more pale; this gives the effect that the victim (Emma) has just seen something terrifying/scary

Filming

On Tuesday, February 5th, Bryony, Jordan, Emma and I started filming our opening 2 minutes for our film.
We started filming at around 11am on Tuesday morning and went through a rough idea on what we had to film. The location we started filming was on a bridge which is over a river. We started filming Emma, walking down a mud path from various angles, then her reaching the bridge where she just looks over the bridge and staring at the river. Then there was a shot of the antagonist (Jordan) standing near Emma, then Jordan has the camera walking towards Emma, making it look we are filming from the Antagonist's point of view. We then filmed Emma turning  around in shock as she has just seen the antagonist (Jordan), we took a a couple of shots for this part as we kept on getting it wrong and also to chose the best one we are going to put in the film.
We are going to film the rest of the 2 minute film over the half term.

What are you doing here? Camera Task/Practise

We had to do a task by saying the phrase "What are you doing here?" 3 times in 3 total different areas. We used a tripod and a still camera but the sound was not clear. Our first "What are you doing here?" was a sort of suprised moment when Jordan walked down a flight of stairs and Emma, acting suprised, saying "What are you doing here", The shot for this was quite steady but we had to keep a steady hand as we didnt use a tripod for this shot.
Secondly, the next shot was not really planned and was quickly planned, this was because we saw a student we all knew and he was walking through the door, so we quickly filmed the shot with Emma being by the door waiting for the student (Archie) and saying the phrase "Archie, what are you doing here?" in a suspicious voice due to the fact he had to be in lesson, this worked really well with the shot because it was quickly planned and also that we had a steady camera due to the use of the tripod.
Our last shot was of Emma and Jordan messing around on the school stage and I coming in pretending as a teacher shouting and also using the phrase "What are YOU doing here!?" as if it was a rhetorical question.

Film Schedule

Bryony, Jordan, Emma and I will begin filming on Sunday the 3rd of February. Emma will be supplying the camera and our scene is shot in Fetcham as i've shown a few pictures of the venue in a previous post. Bryony will be supplying the clothing so I can wear more dark clothing and Emma can appear vulnerable with her white ragged clothing.
We will film from approximately 2 o'clock till 3:30 o'clock. This gives plenty of time to get the perfect shots and scenes that we need then we shall go back to Bryony or Emma's as their closer to the location that we are filming, and shall edit the film till about 5 o'clock. We will get the most simple shots and angles out of the way first and then move on to the most complex angles. This will give us a good idea of the schedule and do the harder work at the end so if the worst comes to the worst and we run out of time (which hopefully won't happen) we can leave out some of the complex work and stick with the previous simple work as it may turn out more effective

Cubase programme

We have started to look at making our own soundtrack and for this we started to use a programme called Cubase. This programme can help us record our own soundtrack by using a piano and choosing a different sounds to create the soundtrack. Cubase is also good for doing soundeffects, and we will be using cubase for the soundeddfects in our opening 2 minutes.
The things we found easy about this programme is that cubase was good for founding the right sounds you would like and it is very useful once you know what you are doing.
But the hard things about it is that if you are first learning on how to it, it is very hard to use and it is very confusing.
We hope that it will get easier as it progresses.
